In my previous career as a university lecturer and course leader, I had the privilege of working with students from a myriad of backgrounds, each bringing their own unique perspectives, expectations, and communication styles. Navigating this diversity required more than just subject matter expertise—it demanded an awareness of how easily miscommunication could derail even the best-laid plans! Now, as a celebrant, I’ve carried these lessons forward, recognising that the stakes are just as high, if not higher, when it comes to crafting the perfect ceremony, whether that's a wedding, funeral, or bespoke event.
Miscommunication is a silent villain in our industry. It can creep in through the smallest cracks—an unclear email, an assumption left unchecked, or a cultural nuance overlooked. As a celebrant, my role is not just to officiate but to listen, understand, and translate a people's vision into reality. But without clear, open, and ongoing communication, that vision can quickly become muddled.
One of the most important lessons I learned was the value of active listening. In the classroom, understanding a student’s needs, fears, and aspirations often made the difference between success and failure. The same applies to ceremonies. I take the time to sit down with each couple, ask the right questions, and listen—not just to their words but to their emotions and intentions behind those words. This process ensures that we are always on the same page, minimising the risk of misunderstandings.
Another crucial aspect is being aware of and sensitive to cultural and personal backgrounds. Just as in the classroom, where every student’s context shaped their learning experience, each couple’s background influences their expectations for their wedding day. Whether it’s honouring specific cultural traditions or simply understanding different communication styles, being attuned to these nuances is key to avoiding miscommunication.
In a field as personal and emotionally charged as weddings or funerals, miscommunication can lead to disappointment, stress, and even hurt feelings. By applying the communication skills honed during my teaching career, I’m committed to ensuring that every couple I work with feels heard, understood, and confident that their wedding ceremony will reflect their unique love story!
