More families are saying goodbye differently – here’s why

I’ve noticed something quietly evolving in the way we say goodbye to our loved ones. More and more families are asking me about direct cremations – and often, they’re not quite sure what that really means, or if it’s right for them.
So let’s talk about it... :)
Direct cremation is a simple, unattended cremation with no formal service at the crematorium. And for some people, that simplicity feels just right – especially when paired with a separate, more personal and meaningful gathering afterwards.
What I’m seeing is that families are choosing to step away from the traditional – and instead, create their own unique space for remembrance. It might be in a woodland, a garden, a village hall, or even at home. Surrounded by trees, candles, stories, music.
There’s no rush. No timetable. And that space gives us room to breathe, to remember, and to honour a life in a way that feels gentle and true.
As a celebrant, I’m here to guide you through it all – with love, empathy, and a calm presence. Whether it’s a quiet cremation followed by a heartfelt tribute later… or something even more nature-led, like a woodland farewell… I’ll walk alongside you, every step of the way.
It’s not just about cost or logistics. It’s about meaning. It’s about reclaiming the goodbye, and shaping it into something real and personal.
If you’re wondering what this might look like for someone you love – or even for yourself – just reach out. I’m always happy to chat.
