In memory of Marlene

I recently had the honour of leading a memorial service for Marlene Little, a well-loved Deputy Head of the School of Fashion, Textile & 3D Design at Birmingham City University. This service, attended by her colleagues and students, was a testament to the remarkable impact she had on everyone around her.

Marlene was not only an educator but also a practitioner and curator whose work spanned the globe. Her journey began with fine art and printmaking in Australia, leading her to the UK where she delved into textiles and fashion, followed by visual communication. Her innovative approach seamlessly photography, textiles, and contemporary social issues, reflecting a deep understanding of materiality and the significance of the material object.

Her colleagues at Birmingham City University spoke fondly of her dedication and creativity, recounting stories that highlighted her passion for teaching and her unwavering support for her students. Marlene's work and life philosophies encouraged students to explore and address social issues through their creative processes, leaving a lasting influence on the next generation of designers and artists.

The memories shared at the Ceremony painted a vivid picture of Marlene's vibrant personality and her profound impact on the academic and creative communities. She was not just a teacher but a mentor and friend, inspiring countless individuals with her knowledge, kindness, and vision.

Marlene Little's legacy will continue to inspire and shape the world of fashion and textiles. Though she is no longer with us, her contributions and the memories of her will remain etched in our hearts forever. Rest in peace, Marlene—you will never be forgotten.
